Tromsø or Rovaniemi for the northern lights
Rovaniemi has the clearer sky and the easier flights. Tromsø sits where the aurora shows on quiet nights. Which matters more depends on when you go and who is travelling.

A usable sky means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, over an area of about 110 km. It says nothing about solar activity, so it is not the chance of seeing the aurora. How we calculate this
Which one to pick
Tromsø
Pick it if the aurora is the main reason for the trip, you can go in January and you will pay for long chases inland on several nights.
Rovaniemi
Pick it if you want direct flights, a clearer sky in March or September and other snow activities, and accept that quiet nights may show little.
The sky, side by side
We compare places on the usable sky: a night with at least two dark hours in a row and half the sky or more free of cloud, averaged over a cell about 110 km across. Solar activity is a separate matter, and it carries extra weight in this comparison.
Rovaniemi leads in every month. The gap is widest at the ends of the season. In September 78% of five-night stays in Rovaniemi had at least one usable night, against 53% in Tromsø. In March it is 82% against 31%. Mid-winter is closer: 72% against 57% in January, which is Tromsø's best month.
Tromsø tours drive inland, so the fairer rival is the Skibotn valley. There 67% of five-night January stays had a usable night, five points behind Rovaniemi. In March Skibotn reached 46%, still far behind.
Position under the oval
This is where Tromsø takes it back. The average auroral oval lies around 67 to 68 degrees geomagnetic latitude. Tromsø is at about 66.6 degrees, with aurora typically overhead from Kp 1. Rovaniemi is at about 63 degrees, the second lowest of our twelve, and typically needs Kp 3.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute gives frequencies for dark, cloudless nights: aurora on about 75% of them at Kilpisjärvi, roughly 50% at the Lapland ski resorts and roughly 25% around Oulu and Kuusamo. Rovaniemi sits between the last two, with no figure of its own.
So Rovaniemi gives you more clear nights, and fewer of them deliver. We cannot multiply the two into one honest number, because no Rovaniemi frequency is published. The Kp guide explains why position matters.
Access and cost
Rovaniemi is easier from western Europe. For winter 2026/27 it has confirmed directs from London Gatwick, several other UK cities, Paris, Milan and Berlin. Tromsø is usually reached via Oslo, with confirmed directs from Helsinki and Glasgow.
Avoid Rovaniemi in December if money matters: a hotel room averaged about EUR 350 a night in December 2023. Tromsø's February average is about EUR 238. We have no like-for-like month for the two.
Rovaniemi is also much colder, with a mean January minimum of about -13.5 C against -5.3 C.
Tours and blank nights
Tromsø tours are long. The listed coach chase runs eight hours from EUR 146.84 and gives a 50% discount on another activity if nothing shows.
Rovaniemi's cheapest listed tour is three hours from EUR 79, with a free repeat the next day, subject to availability, or a 50% refund. Its eight-hour minibus tour, capped at 8 people, is from EUR 139 and states no policy (all checked 4 October 2026). See which tour types do what.
Which one we would pick
For aurora first, in January: Tromsø, for a week, chasing inland. A clear night there needs very little from the sun.
For March or September, or a family trip with other things planned: Rovaniemi, for five nights. March is also the month the Finnish Meteorological Institute calls best for northern Finland.
If you want both a clear sky and a strong position within the Nordic countries, look at Abisko, which beats both in January and February in our data. The stronger-sky Lapland option is Kiruna, which shares Abisko's airport: it beats Rovaniemi in every month, peaking at 87% of five-night stays in March, at a geomagnetic latitude of about 64.7 degrees. How many nights to book applies to all four.

Common questions
Is Tromsø or Rovaniemi better for seeing the northern lights?
They trade strengths. Rovaniemi had a usable sky far more often in our 2001-2024 data, for example 74% against 48% of five-night February stays. Tromsø is closer to the auroral oval, so a clear night there needs less solar activity.
What Kp do you need in Rovaniemi compared with Tromsø?
By third-party estimates the aurora is typically overhead from Kp 3 in Rovaniemi and from Kp 1 in Tromsø. Rovaniemi's geomagnetic latitude is about 63 degrees, Tromsø's about 66.6.
Which is colder, Tromsø or Rovaniemi?
Rovaniemi, clearly. Its mean daily minimum in January is about -13.5 C, against about -5.3 C in Tromsø, which is on the coast.
Which has cheaper northern lights tours?
Rovaniemi. Listed tours start from EUR 79 for three hours, against EUR 146.84 for an eight-hour chase in Tromsø, checked 4 October 2026. The Tromsø tour is much longer, so the prices are not like for like.
