Northern lights in Rovaniemi: clearer sky, weaker position
Rovaniemi is simple to fly to and has a better sky than the Norwegian coast. The catch is its position: the aurora usually needs a little more activity to reach it.
- Best sky: March
- 82% of 5-night stays
- Overhead from Kp 3
- -13 °C on January nights

A usable sky means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, over an area of about 110 km. It says nothing about solar activity, so it is not the chance of seeing the aurora. How we calculate this

What our sky numbers say about Rovaniemi
We call a sky usable when a night had at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, averaged over a satellite cell about 110 km across. Rovaniemi does well on this test at both ends of the season.
March is the best month. 35% of nights were usable and 82% of five-night stays had at least one, which puts Rovaniemi fifth of the twelve and second of the nine European places, behind Kiruna. September is nearly as good, at 78%, though with only 7.7 dark hours a night.
The middle of the season is flatter. November is the low point at 65% of five-night stays, October is 68%, and December to February run from 70% to 74%. By April the nights are too bright to count.
Three nights in March gave a usable night in 66% of stays, five in 82%, seven in 89%. Our advice is five nights. The nights page shows the full table.
A good sky is half the story here. Solar activity is a separate matter, and in Rovaniemi it matters more than in most of our places. See the last section.
Seeing the aurora from town
Visit Rovaniemi says viewing spots range from the surrounding wilderness to places a short walk from the centre, without naming them. Finnair's local guide does: Arctic Garden, by the Arktikum museum, is a short walk. Ounasvaara hill is about 4 km to the top, by foot, bus or car. The Arctic Circle Hiking Area, just over 20 km north, needs a car or a tour.
We found no measurement of light pollution in the centre.
Getting there
The airport is about 8 km from the centre. For winter 2026/27 Visit Rovaniemi lists easyJet from London Gatwick (11 November 2026 to 24 March 2027) and from other UK cities, Paris, Milan, Berlin and Lyon, plus Ryanair from Milan Bergamo and Paris Beauvais from 25 October 2026. BA Euroflyer starts from Gatwick on 4 December 2026, Mondays and Fridays. Otherwise you connect in Helsinki.
The airport shuttle takes 20 to 30 minutes. Sources give EUR 8 or about EUR 10, and we could not confirm the fare with the operator. A taxi is roughly EUR 30-40 (checked 4 October 2026).
What it costs
December is Santa season and prices show it: Yle reported about EUR 350 a night for a Rovaniemi hotel room in December 2023. We found no sourced figure for January to March.
Listed tours start from EUR 79 per person for a three-hour bus tour (7.6 from 885 reviews). The photography tour with barbecue is from EUR 110. The eight-hour minibus tour, capped at 8 people, and the snowmobile ride are both from EUR 139 (checked 4 October 2026).
Tour or on your own
On a clear night with activity forecast, walk to Arctic Garden first. It costs nothing.
Book a tour for the nights when cloud is patchy. The EUR 79 bus tour has the best stated terms of any listing on this site: if no aurora is seen you can repeat it free the next day, subject to availability, or take a 50% refund. It is only three hours, so it cannot go far. For a real chase, the eight-hour minibus scores 8.5 from 67 reviews but states no policy.
Some Rovaniemi operators advertise money-back chases. We could not confirm their terms, so read them yourself. Is a tour worth it covers what to look for.
The catch: a lower geomagnetic latitude
Rovaniemi sits at about 63 degrees geomagnetic latitude, the second lowest of the twelve, above only Luleå. The average auroral oval lies around 67 to 68 degrees, so on a quiet night the lights are usually north of the town. Overhead aurora typically needs about Kp 3. Both figures are third-party estimates.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts it in frequencies. On dark, cloudless nights the aurora is seen on about 75% of nights at Kilpisjärvi, roughly 50% at the Lapland ski resorts and roughly 25% around Oulu and Kuusamo. Rovaniemi lies between the last two bands. No Rovaniemi figure is published. Two other Finnish bases on this site, Levi and Saariselkä, lie in that roughly 50% band, with sky figures close to Rovaniemi's in Saariselkä and lower from October to March in Levi.
So a usable night here turns into a sighting less often than in Tromsø. The clearer sky makes up for part of that, and we cannot say how much. The Kp guide explains the scale.

Common questions
What is the best month to see the northern lights in Rovaniemi?
For the sky, March: 82% of five-night stays in our 2001-2024 data had at least one dark night with a usable sky. September is next at 78%. The Finnish Meteorological Institute also names March and early April as the best time in northern Finland.
Is Rovaniemi too far south for the northern lights?
No, but it is the second most southerly of our twelve in geomagnetic terms, after Luleå, at about 63 degrees. The aurora is typically overhead from Kp 3, so on quiet nights it may sit low on the northern horizon or not show.
Can you see the northern lights from Rovaniemi town?
Sometimes. Arctic Garden beside Arktikum is a short walk from the centre and Ounasvaara hill is about 4 km away. The Arctic Circle Hiking Area, just over 20 km north, needs a car or a tour.
What do Rovaniemi tours do if there is no aurora?
It depends on the listing. The cheapest bus tour lets you repeat the tour free the next day, subject to availability, or take a 50% refund. The photography tour offers a rebooking at half price within a week, and two others state nothing.
