A usable sky means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, over an area of about 110 km. It says nothing about solar activity, so it is not the chance of seeing the aurora. How we calculate this

What our sky numbers say about Kiruna

We count a night as having a usable sky when there were at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, averaged over a satellite cell about 110 km across. On that test Kiruna is steady. Between 73% and 87% of five-night stays had at least one usable night in every month from September to March, and no other European place we cover stays above 70% all season.

March is the best month, at 87%, with 40% of single nights usable. That ranks fourth of the twelve, behind Yellowknife, Whitehorse and Fairbanks. November is the weakest, at 73%. (In September and October Luleå, on the coast, does a little better.)

Three March nights gave a usable night in 72% of stays, seven in 94%. We would book four or five. The nights page has the full table.

These are sky statistics, and solar activity is a separate matter. The position is good: about 64.7 degrees geomagnetic latitude, with aurora typically overhead from Kp 2.

Seeing the aurora from town

Kiruna is a working mining town, and we found no measurement of light pollution in the centre. The tourist board names two options: Luossavaara, the town's own mountain about 4 km from the centre, and Camp Ripan, where the street lamps are designed to limit light spill. We could not confirm public transport to Luossavaara at night, so count on a taxi or a car.

The Swedish Institute of Space Physics is based here and runs an "Aurora over Kiruna?" page and an alert app.

Getting there

Kiruna airport is about 10 km from the centre. SAS and Norwegian fly from Stockholm Arlanda all year in about 90 minutes. Winter directs for 2026/27 are Copenhagen (SAS, 17 December 2026 to 7 March 2027, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays) and Düsseldorf (Eurowings, Saturdays, 6 February to 20 March 2027). No direct flight from the UK is listed.

The airport coach is timed to flights and you pay on board by cash or card. A new operator took over on 1 July 2026 and we could not confirm the current fare (checked 5 October 2026). There is also a night train from Stockholm, whose timetable we could not confirm. The station is about 6 km from the centre, with free transfer buses.

What it costs

An aggregator puts the average hotel night at about GBP 124 across the year, about GBP 219 in February, the dearest month, and about GBP 68 in March. Set against the sky table, that makes March the obvious pick.

Three tours are listed here, with from prices per person (checked 5 October 2026): the Aurora Colosseum trip at EUR 123.59 (score 9.2 from 23 reviews), a four-hour minibus chase at EUR 167.88 (9.3 from 12) and a five-hour snowmobile ride at EUR 176.74 (9.4 from 54).

Tour or on your own

One tour, and the rest on your own. The minibus chase is the listing that can move you away from cloud. The snowmobile ride is an activity that happens after dark, so judge it as that. None of the three states what happens on a night without aurora. Assume nothing is owed and read what happens when the aurora does not show. All three allow free cancellation up to seven days ahead.

Kiruna or Abisko: what the two rows say

Kiruna's tourist board sends aurora visitors to Abisko and repeats the "blue hole" story. Our numbers do not back that advice. The two share an airport, and on the five-night figure Kiruna beats Abisko in every month from September to March: widely in September (79% against 52%) and March (87% against 69%), narrowly in January (80% against 77%). Only the January share of single nights favours Abisko, 35% against 34%.

That does not disprove a local clear patch over Abisko. Our cells are about 110 km across and cannot see a gap a few kilometres wide. What it does show is that the Kiruna area is not the cloudy fallback it is taken for.

Abisko keeps darkness at the door and a slightly higher geomagnetic latitude (65.3). Kiruna has the town. The Icehotel is about 15 km away in Jukkasjärvi, and the centre is being moved to make way for the mine: the church, 672.4 tonnes, was moved whole in August 2025. See the best place by the numbers for all twelve.

Common questions

What is the best month to see the northern lights in Kiruna?

March in our 2001-2024 sky data: 87% of five-night stays had at least one dark night with a usable sky, and 40% of single nights were usable. November is the weakest month at 73%. These figures describe cloud and darkness, not solar activity.

Is Kiruna or Abisko better for the northern lights?

In our sky data Kiruna had more five-night stays with a usable night than Abisko in every month from September to March, for example 87% against 69% in March. Abisko has darkness at the door, and our 110 km cells cannot resolve a small local clearing.

Can you see the northern lights from Kiruna town?

The tourist board names Luossavaara, the town's mountain about 4 km from the centre, and Camp Ripan, where street lamps are designed to limit light spill. We found no measured figure for light pollution in the centre, so we do not rate it.

How do you get to Kiruna?

SAS and Norwegian fly from Stockholm Arlanda all year in about 90 minutes. In winter 2026/27 there are also direct flights from Copenhagen and Düsseldorf. The airport is about 10 km from the centre, with a coach timed to flights.
