Northern lights in Luleå: clear autumn skies, far from the oval

Luleå is a coastal city with some of the best autumn sky numbers we have. It is also the furthest of our twelve places from the auroral zone, so it needs a more active sun.

A usable sky means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, over an area of about 110 km. It says nothing about solar activity, so it is not the chance of seeing the aurora. How we calculate this

What our sky numbers say about Luleå

A usable sky, as we count it, is a night with at least two dark hours in a row and half the sky or more free of cloud, averaged over a satellite cell about 110 km across.

Luleå's season runs the other way round from most of Lapland. September is the best month: 84% of five-night stays had at least one usable night, third of the twelve places we cover. October holds at 83%, level with Whitehorse at the top of that month's ranking. Then the figure slides, to 72% in November and 66% in February.

March collapses. Only 13% of nights were usable and 37% of five-night stays had one, level with Akureyri and ahead of only Tromsø. We cannot tell you why from this data, only that it is an average over 24 winters.

For an autumn trip, three nights gave a usable night in about 70% of stays and five in about 84%. More on the nights page.

Seeing the aurora from town

Luleå is a city of about 49,000 with a steelworks, and there is no light measurement for it. Visit Luleå's photography guide names three spots: Gäddvik, about 5.5 km from the centre, the top of the Ormberget ski hill, about 4 km out, and Sinksundet, whose distance we could not confirm. Nor could we confirm night buses to any of them, so a car or a tour is the realistic way.

From January to March the ice track puts open, dark sea ice within walking distance of the centre. That is our inference, not a tourist board recommendation.

Getting there

This is the easy part. SAS and Norwegian fly from Stockholm Arlanda in about 1 h 20, and the airport is about 7 km from the city. Local buses 4 and 104 stop outside the terminal and take card or app payment, not cash. We could not confirm the fare, this winter's flight frequencies, or whether last winter's seasonal flights from Zurich and Paris return (checked 5 October 2026). A night train from Stockholm also serves Luleå.

What it costs

February is the dearest month for hotels, at an aggregator average of about EUR 151 to EUR 186 a night. We have no autumn figure.

Two tours are listed here, with from prices per person (checked 5 October 2026). A three-hour minibus tour costs EUR 114.28 and scores 8.2 from 21 reviews. A snowshoe tour is EUR 132 and has no reviews yet. Both allow free cancellation up to five days ahead.

Tour or on your own

In autumn, on your own with a car: the sky is often usable and the named spots are a short drive. In winter the minibus tour earns its price more easily. Neither listing states what happens on a night without aurora, so assume no refund and no second try. See is a tour worth it.

Furthest from the oval, and the sea ice

Luleå lies at about 62.2 degrees geomagnetic latitude, the lowest of our twelve places and about 2.5 degrees below Kiruna. Aurora is typically overhead from about Kp 3, against Kp 2 at Kiruna. On a quiet night it may sit on the northern horizon, or not appear. The tourist board publishes no frequency claim, and for a forecast it points visitors to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Read how the Kp index works before you go.

So a clear sky is necessary here, and often not enough. The honest pitch is a city break where the aurora is a bonus.

The sea ice is the other half of the story, and its timing is awkward. The free ice track, up to about 10 km of ploughed ice around the centre, usually opens between late December and mid-January and closes around the start of April. It does not exist in September and October, when the sky numbers are best. It is still open in March, when they are worst.

Common questions

Can you see the northern lights in Luleå?

Yes. Visit Luleå says they are visible from late August until the first days of April. Luleå has the lowest geomagnetic latitude of our twelve places, about 62.2 degrees, so overhead aurora typically needs Kp 3 or more.

What is the best month to see the northern lights in Luleå?

September in our 2001-2024 sky data: 84% of five-night stays had at least one dark night with a usable sky, and October is level at 83%. March is the weakest month at 37%. These figures describe cloud and darkness, not solar activity.

Where can you watch the northern lights near Luleå?

Visit Luleå names Gäddvik, about 5.5 km from the centre, the top of the Ormberget ski hill, about 4 km out, and Sinksundet. We could not confirm night buses to them, so plan on a car or a tour.

Is Luleå or Kiruna better for the northern lights?

Kiruna, in most months. It sits about 2.5 degrees higher in geomagnetic latitude, and in March 87% of five-night stays had a usable night against 37% in Luleå. Luleå is slightly ahead in September and October.
