Northern lights in Tromsø: well placed, often cloudy

Tromsø is easy to reach and sits right under the auroral oval. Its weak point is coastal cloud, which is why most tours here are long drives inland.

  • Best sky: January
  • 57% of 5-night stays
  • Overhead from Kp 1

A usable sky means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, over an area of about 110 km. It says nothing about solar activity, so it is not the chance of seeing the aurora. How we calculate this

What our sky numbers say about Tromsø

We count a night as having a usable sky when there were at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, averaged over a satellite cell about 110 km across. By that test Tromsø is one of the two weakest of our twelve places, along with Akureyri in north Iceland. It comes last in the five-night ranking in October, November, December, February and March, and second to last in January, ahead of Akureyri.

January is the best month: 21% of nights were usable, and 57% of five-night stays had at least one usable night. October, November, December and February sit between 47% and 50%. March is the worst, at 31%, with only 9% of nights usable. April is too bright to count.

So plan for length. Three nights in January gave at least one usable night in 43% of stays, seven nights in 67%. See how many nights to book for the full table.

Two caveats. These are sky statistics, and solar activity is a separate matter. And the cell is an area average: a cross-check on a second dataset puts Tromsø a little higher than our figure.

Seeing the aurora from town

Tromsø lies at a geomagnetic latitude of about 66.6 degrees, where the aurora is typically overhead from Kp 1. Visit Tromsø's own northern lights page names no viewing spots in the centre, and we found no measurement of light pollution there, so we will not put a rating on it.

The places people use without a car are Telegrafbukta beach (about 30 minutes on foot, or bus 33 or 40), Prestvannet lake (about 1.5 km, 25 minutes on foot) and the upper station of the Fjellheisen cable car, at about 420 m.

Getting there

Tromsø Airport Langnes is normally reached via Oslo. For winter 2026/27, confirmed direct routes are Helsinki (Norwegian, from 18 November 2026, Wednesdays and Sundays) and Glasgow (Norwegian, from 11 December 2026, Mondays and Fridays). An Icelandair link from Keflavik, twice weekly from 23 October 2026 to 29 March 2027, is reported. Directs from London and Frankfurt were reported for earlier winters, but we could not confirm this season's schedule, so check the airline.

The Flybussen airport express takes about 20 minutes and costs 125 NOK single or 200 NOK return (price list valid to 25 October 2026, checked 4 October 2026).

What it costs

Tromsø is expensive. An aggregator average for a double room in February is about EUR 238 a night, and December is the dearest month. On Visit Tromsø's listings, big-bus chases run about 1,100-1,300 NOK and small groups about 1,750-2,400 NOK.

The tours listed on this page start from EUR 146.84 per person for an eight-hour coach chase, EUR 183.78 for a cruise with dinner and EUR 2,207.30 for a private tour (checked 4 October 2026).

Tour or on your own

In Tromsø we would book a chase. The reason is in the next section: the usable sky is inland, and a guide with a vehicle can go and find it.

The listed coach tour runs eight hours, scores 9.3 from 487 reviews and offers a 50% discount on your next activity if no aurora shows, subject to availability. Note the maximum group of 47. The dinner cruise states no policy and scores 5.7 from 13 reviews. A boat cannot outrun cloud, so we would skip it.

Local operators vary: some offer nothing, one a 50% discount on a second night, one a free retry on a big coach valid only for the same season. A retry is useless without spare nights. Read what happens when the aurora does not show and is a tour worth it before paying.

Why the coastal numbers are low, and what driving inland changes

We ran the same test on Skibotn, an inland valley about 1 h 45 by road from Tromsø and a common chase direction. From November to March it beats the coast every month. In January 67% of five-night stays had a usable night, against 57%. In February it was 60% against 48%, in March 46% against 31%. In September and October there was no real gain.

That is a useful margin, and it is also the limit of what we can show. A chase picks its direction each night, which a fixed cell cannot measure. One Tromsø operator advertises a 96.39% success rate; it is self-reported, with no method published. And Skibotn still trails Abisko and Rovaniemi from November to March.

Common questions

What is the best month to see the northern lights in Tromsø?

In our 2001-2024 sky data January is the best month: 57% of five-night stays had at least one dark night with a usable sky. March is the worst at 31%. These figures describe cloud and darkness only, not solar activity.

How many nights do I need in Tromsø?

More than in most places. Even seven nights in January gave at least one usable night in only 67% of stays, and three nights gave 43%. If you can only spare three nights, plan a chase tour inland for each clear-looking evening.

Can you see the northern lights from Tromsø city centre?

On strong nights people watch from Telegrafbukta beach, Prestvannet lake or the top of the Fjellheisen cable car, all reachable without a car. We found no measured figure for light pollution in the centre, so we do not rate it.

Is a northern lights tour in Tromsø worth it?

Here more than anywhere else on this site, because the sky is clearer inland. In our data the Skibotn valley had a usable night in 67% of five-night January stays, against 57% for the Tromsø area.
