A usable sky means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, over an area of about 110 km. It says nothing about solar activity, so it is not the chance of seeing the aurora. How we calculate this
By day in Reykjavík
The nights are long, but the aurora fills a few hours at most. What people do with the rest.

What our sky numbers say about Reykjavík
A usable sky, in our data, means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, averaged over a satellite cell about 110 km across. On that measure Reykjavík is in the middle of the twelve, and the best of the nine European places in November and December.
December is the top month: 34% of nights were usable, and 76% of five-night stays had at least one. October and November are close, at 73% and 74%. In November and December only the three North American places rank higher, and in October Luleå and Kiruna do too. January and February drop to 65% and 67%, March to 60%.
April still has 5.2 dark hours a night, so Reykjavík is one of only four places where we publish an April figure. It is a weak one: 44% of five-night stays.
Stay five nights if you can. In the October to December window three nights gave a usable night in 56% to 61% of stays, five nights in 73% to 76%, seven in 83% to 85%. The nights page has every month.
Iceland's other base on this site, Akureyri in the north, has weaker sky numbers in every month: its best five-night figure is 57%, in September and December.
All of this is about cloud and darkness. Solar activity is separate. Reykjavík's geomagnetic latitude is about 64 degrees, a little south of the average oval, and the aurora is typically overhead from Kp 2.
Seeing the aurora from town
Reykjavík is a capital city, so expect street light. Visit Reykjavík names two low-light spots inside the urban area: Grótta, on the Seltjarnarnes peninsula about 4.7 km from the centre, and Öskjuhlíð, the 61 m hill under Perlan, which you can walk to. At Grótta the lighthouse itself is reachable only at low tide. We could not confirm a bus route there.
Further out, the tourist board lists Heiðmörk and Krýsuvík in the wider capital area. Þingvellir National Park, about 45 km to the north-east, is car or tour only.
Getting there
Keflavík International is about 50 km from the city. It is Icelandair's hub, with direct flights from both Europe and North America, which makes this the simplest of the twelve for most travellers. Additions reported for winter 2026/27 include United from Chicago, three times a week.
The Flybus to the BSÍ terminal costs 3,999 ISK one way for an adult and takes about 45 minutes. Hotel drop-off adds 1,300 ISK and about 30 minutes. Buses leave 35 to 45 minutes after each arrival (checked 4 October 2026).
What it costs
An aggregator average for a hotel in February is about USD 201 a night. Three-star hotels average roughly GBP 105 across the year.
Tours are among the cheapest of the twelve. The listed bus tour starts from EUR 73.58 per person for four hours and scores 7.6 from 211 reviews. The cruise is from EUR 105.64, the Golden Circle combination from EUR 154.44 and the Blue Lagoon combination from EUR 250.61 (checked 4 October 2026).
Tour or on your own
With a rental car, go on your own. The Icelandic Met Office publishes a cloud map and an activity scale six days ahead, and Þingvellir is about 45 km away.
Without a car, the basic bus tour is the sensible buy, and we would book it for the first evening. We would not choose a combination tour for the aurora part: the two listed score 6.6 and 6.1. See which tour types suit which traveller.
The city break and the free retry, checked
The pitch for Reykjavík is that a missed night costs you nothing. Three of the four listed tours offer another attempt, and none states a refund. Reykjavik Excursions goes furthest: free rebooking until you see the aurora, on a ticket valid for two years, and a refund or rebooking if it cancels on a bad forecast.
The catch is arithmetic. A retry needs a spare night with a usable sky. In December, the best month, 39% of three-night stays had no usable night at all. The Reykjavik Excursions coach tour lasts 3.5 hours at most and the listed bus tour four, so neither can drive far to escape cloud.
A long weekend is a city break with an aurora attempt attached. For better sky odds, add nights or read Iceland or Norway and what to do when no aurora shows.

Common questions
What is the best month to see the northern lights in Reykjavík?
In our 2001-2024 sky data December is the best month: 76% of five-night stays had at least one dark night with a usable sky. October and November are close behind at 73% and 74%. This measures cloud and darkness, not solar activity.
Can you see the northern lights from Reykjavík itself?
Sometimes. Visit Reykjavík names Grótta and Öskjuhlíð as low-light spots inside the urban area, and Heiðmörk and Krýsuvík in the wider capital area. Þingvellir, about 45 km away, needs a car or a tour.
What happens if my Reykjavík northern lights tour sees nothing?
The usual answer is a free second attempt and no refund. Reykjavik Excursions lets you rebook free of charge until you see the aurora, with a ticket valid for two years. That only helps if you have spare nights.
How many nights should I stay in Reykjavík for the aurora?
Five, if you can. From October to December about three quarters of five-night stays had at least one usable night, against 56% to 61% of three-night stays.
