What works here

  • Best mid-winter sky of our three Finnish places: 77% of five-night February stays had a usable night
  • About 65 degrees geomagnetic latitude, in FMI's band of roughly 50% of dark, clear nights
  • A small village beside Urho Kekkonen National Park; the airport bus needs no booking

What to weigh

  • Direct flights to Ivalo start only in December; before that the route is via Helsinki
  • Cold (mean January minimum -16.5 C at Ivalo) and little to do by day beyond snow activities
  • Listed tours have few or no reviews, and none states a policy for a night without aurora

A usable sky means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, over an area of about 110 km. It says nothing about solar activity, so it is not the chance of seeing the aurora. How we calculate this

What our sky numbers say about Saariselkä

A night has a usable sky, in our terms, when there were at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, averaged over a satellite cell about 110 km across.

Saariselkä's season is even, not spectacular. March is the best month: 78% of five-night stays had at least one usable night, sixth of the twelve places we cover. February (77%) and January (76%) are almost level, and in February only Kiruna does better among the European places. October is the weakest month, at 63%.

Three nights in February gave a usable night in 60% of stays, five in 77%, seven in 87%. We would book five. The nights page has every month.

All of this is about cloud and darkness. Solar activity is separate, and here the position helps: about 65 degrees geomagnetic latitude, the highest of our three Finnish places, with aurora typically overhead from Kp 2.

Seeing the aurora from the village

The village is small and borders Urho Kekkonen National Park, which is promising, but we found no light measurement. The spots usually named are the Kaunispää and Kiilopää fells, open ground away from the village lights. Kaunispää has a daytime chairlift. We could not confirm night access on foot, or the distance and bus to Kiilopää, so ask your hotel before relying on either. One operator sets its aurora camp about 20 km from the lights.

Getting there

Ivalo airport is about 25 km north of the village. The usual route is Finnair via Helsinki. Seasonal directs start in December: a new Wednesday flight from Munich runs from 23 December 2026 to 24 March 2027, and last winter Lufthansa Group airlines flew from Frankfurt, Vienna, Düsseldorf and Zürich. Start dates reported for London, Paris and other cities are not confirmed by the airport operator, so check before building a trip around them.

A shuttle bus meets flights and you buy the ticket on board, with no booking needed. We could not confirm the fare (checked 5 October 2026).

What it costs

We have no confirmed hotel figure. One aggregator snippet suggests about EUR 260 a night in February, which we could not verify. Glass igloos cost far more: roughly EUR 750 to 850 a night for two with half board is reported for Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, about 35 km from the airport, in a review we cannot date.

Tours are easier to pin down. Four are listed here, with from prices per person (checked 5 October 2026): a minibus tour from Saariselkä at EUR 121 (score 7 from 2 reviews), a snowmobile tour at EUR 118 (one review, scoring 2), a Lake Inari tour from Ivalo at EUR 165 and a snowshoe outing at EUR 179. The last two have no reviews yet.

Tour or on your own

We would book one tour early in the stay and keep the other nights for walking out. None of the four listings states what happens on a night without aurora, and three do not state a cancellation window either, so read the conditions before paying. With so few reviews, the scores tell you little. A local operator's brochure prices similar outings from EUR 91 to EUR 175, a fair yardstick. More in what happens when the aurora does not show.

What FMI's statistics say about northern Lapland

The Finnish Meteorological Institute publishes the one sourced frequency figure for this region. At the Lapland ski resorts, Saariselkä named among them, aurora occurs on roughly 50% of nights when the sky is dark and cloudless. Further north-west, at Kilpisjärvi, it gives 75%. Rovaniemi falls between the 50% and 25% bands.

Compare that with a local operator's brochure, which says there is a possibility of aurora on about 200 days a year in Lapland and gives no source. The FMI figure is conditional on a clear sky, and in our data only 23% to 33% of Saariselkä's nights had a usable one.

So the case for Saariselkä over Levi is modest and real: a little further north, a smaller village, and more usable nights from November to March.
