A usable sky means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, over an area of about 110 km. It says nothing about solar activity, so it is not the chance of seeing the aurora. How we calculate this
What October is like
By mid-October the nights are almost the same length wherever you go on our list: 11.3 hours with the sun more than 10 degrees below the horizon in Tromsø, Rovaniemi, Abisko and Yellowknife, and 11.4 in Reykjavík and Fairbanks. Darkness stops separating the places, so cloud does.
The air has cooled to about freezing in Tromsø and Rovaniemi (0C mean during dark hours) and 4C in Reykjavík. Abisko, Fairbanks and Yellowknife average between -4C and -5C.
October sits on one of the two peaks of the Russell-McPherron model, which predicts the seasonal maximum in geomagnetic activity near 5 October and 5 April. UAF calls the tendency strong but poorly understood. It concerns solar activity, it does nothing for cloud, and the size of the effect is disputed.
One practical date: the Aurora Sky Station above Abisko lists its 2026/27 night visits from 19 October, so early October there has no station trip.
Where the sky is on your side
A usable night means at least two dark hours in a row with half the sky or more free of cloud, averaged over a satellite cell about 110 km across. In October 83% of five-night stays in Whitehorse and in Luleå had at least one, and 77% in Kiruna, the next Nordic place. Two Swedish places in the top three happens in no other month. Yellowknife has 76%, Fairbanks 74% and Reykjavík 73%.
Reykjavík gained five points on September while Yellowknife lost 18. Destination Canada describes a cloudier gap there from early October to mid-November, and only 32% of Yellowknife nights were usable this month, against 48% in September.
Rovaniemi holds 68%. Levi and Saariselkä are on 63%, Abisko is at 54%, Akureyri at 48% and Tromsø is last at 47%.
How many nights to plan
Four places show the range:
- Reykjavík: 56% of three-night stays, 73% of five-night and 83% of seven-night stays had a usable night.
- Fairbanks: 58%, 74% and 85%.
- Tromsø: 34%, 47% and 56%.
- Luleå: 69%, 83% and 91%.
Reykjavík and Fairbanks are nearly identical in October, which is true of no other month. A week in Tromsø gives the same 56% as three nights in Reykjavík. Try your own dates in the nights calculator.
Is it a good month to book a tour?
It suits the month's top two places, with one difference between them. The Whitehorse tour (from EUR 110.68 per person, checked 5 October 2026) offers a repeat if the lights do not appear. The Luleå minibus tour (from EUR 114.28) states no policy for a night without aurora. A repeat only helps if you have a spare night, so see what happens if no aurora shows. For the bigger question, read whether a tour is worth it.
